WHL well represented with Team Canada Announcement

Earlier today Team Canada announced their roster for the World Junior tryout camp. The roster is going to have a very fresh look as there are only 3 returning players.

Here's the list:

Goaltenders

Calvin Pickard - Seattle (WHL)
Olivier Roy - Acadie-Bathurst (QMJHL)
Mark Visentin - Niagara (OHL)

Defencemen

Sean Couturier - Drummondville (QMJHL)
Cody Eakin - Swift Current (WHL)
Marcus Foligno - Sudbury (OHL)
Brendan Gallagher - Vancouver (WHL)
Curtis Hamilton - Saskatoon (WHL)
Joey Hishon - Owen Sound (OHL)
Quinton Howden - Moose Jaw (WHL)

Brad Ross - Portland (WHL)
Jaden Schwartz - Colorado (WCHA)
Riley Sheahan - Notre Dame (NCAA)
Reilly Smith - Miami University (CCHA)
Linden Vey - Medicine Hat (WHL)
Garrett Wilson - Owen Sound (OHL)

Adding up all the numbers, the WHL is definitely well represented. Definitely more invitees than expected.

WHL- 17 invitees
OHL- 11 invitees
QMJHL- 6 invitees
AHL- 1 invitee
NCAA- 3 invitees
WCHA- 1 invitee

Considering the head coach is from the OHL, and the tournament is being played in Buffalo, New York, I expected a much larger Ontario contingent. It's definitely a big feather in the hat of the WHL as they feature a number of players that can fill a number of different roles throughout the roster.

There were also some surprises in regards to players left off the list. A few notables in that category included Stefan Elliott (WHL), Scott Glennie (WHL), Brenden Ranford (WHL), Gregg McKegg (OHL), Tyler Toffoli (OHL) and Taylor Doherty (OHL).

There is some talk that Brandon Gormley of the Moncton Wildcats, who is hurt, won't be able to take part in the camp. That would allow Hockey Canada to add another defender to the camp. It will be interesting to see who that is. It's what happened last year as Tyler Cuma was invited to the camp late.

There is sure to be a ton of breakdown and predictions as to who will make the team in what role. I will do one at some point. I don't know if that will happen tonight, tomorrow or in the near future. We will see.

The camp kicks off in Toronto on December 12 and runs to the 15th. After that the squad will be named.
